On Thursday, Miuccia Prada sent models down the runway of her spring 2013 show wearing shoes that had a wooden, platform base and leather upper, which were stringed together with colorful ribbon. The construction quickly went viral on Twitter, with the Financial Times’ luxury page tweeting, “Prada invents the foot glove.” So, are these futuristic-looking but impractical soles destined for our closets? Probably not. Runway shows at the big four fashion weeks—New York, London, Milan and Paris—have never been about spreading practical trends. Most times, they’re best for introducing “directionals”—colors, silhouettes or other ideas that mainstream brands can reinterpret and make work for the mass customer. So we’ll take the excitement with a grain of proverbial salt.
