Saint James’ original ambition was a simple one: to make traditional nautical wear from the finest and warmest wool. Although their sweaters are known to survive decades, and their striped shirts have become the biggest items of the past two summers, the company recently decided to take their traditional models and reinvent more street-ready alternatives for Barneys. Their famous sweaters became a shawl cardigan; their shirts became henleys. And while they are made from the same fine wools and with 150-year-old techniques, the clothes themselves don’t smack so strongly of oysters and sea salt.
