It’s no longer adequate to describe Michael Kors as a fashion designer—his creations have extended into accessories, handbags, shoes and even home goods. But in 2012, the designer will be best remembered for designing the shift that Michelle Obama wore on Election night, when her husband won a second White House term. That burgundy dress—which she first debuted in 2010—was one of many Kors-designed pieces worn this year by Obama, herself an influential fashion icon.
