Retail for the 1%: Oscar de la Renta Named America’s Most Expensive Store

Shoppers at the New York City flagship spend an average of $3,217 per trip

Having dressed First Families and Hollywood starlets alike, it was no secret that Oscar de la Renta’s ready-to-wear pieces came with steep prices. After all, this is the couturier who slapped a $2,490 price tag on a baseball jersey last May. No wonder, then, that the designer’s New York City boutique has topped Racked’s newly released list of the country’s most expensive stores.

With an average of $3,217 spent per shopper each trip, Oscar de la Renta edged out Giorgio Armani (New York City), Loro Piana (Boston), Akris (New York City) and Maxfield (Los Angeles), who rounded out the top five, respectively. Other luxury mainstays, including Chanel, Lanvin and Dolce & Gabbana, made the list of 25 shops, which were ranked according to data from 20 million Visa and Mastercard holders by Bundle.com. The website, which analyzes spending habits across various industries, looked at average receipt amounts at the stores, leaving out wholesale, manufacturers and large department stores.

A typical de la Renta dress—like the green number that Girls actress Allison Williams wore to the 2012 Emmy Awards—will set you back $5,790, while more elaborate gowns run closer to $12,000. With price tags like those, the $3,217 average doesn’t seem so outrageous.
