Though he snapped some of the style industry’s most famous faces, among them Cindy Crawford, Twiggy and a young Grace Coddington, there has never been a tome solely dedicated to Terence Donovan’s fashion photography. That changes this month with a new publication from Art / Books, aptly titled Terence Donovan Fashion. The nearly 200 images are arranged chronologically, showcasing the British lensman’s black-and-white work from the 1960s, where he was as much a celebrity as the people he photographed as part of the Swinging London scene, to his color photographs during the exuberant fashion world of the 1980s and 1990s. Donovan, who committed suicide in 1996, was known for his technical mastery and gritty portraits—both on vivid display in this new book. Here are some highlights of the photographer’s 40-year career.

Terence Donovan Fashion, edited by Diana Donovan and David Hillman with a text by Robin Muir and foreword by Grace Coddington, is available from Art / Books this month.
