Fans of Downton Abbey will be aware that the fictional estate inhabited by the Crawley family isn’t for sale, now that the family doesn’t really need the money from the sale. But that doesn’t mean you can’t live in a space that hints at the Edwardian-era glamor of Downton—especially now that Downton Abbey-branded furniture is on the horizon.
CNBC reported this week that, even though the show has been a critical and ratings success for a few years, its producers at Carnival Films will only just now begin to explore the extent of merchandizing possible for the franchise. Gareth Neame, the company’s managing director, said that the products coming out in 2013 would range from “fashion, apparel and homeware and furniture to wallpapers, beauty products and stationery.”
Neame added that it was important to make sure a show was a true success before trying to get into more complicated products. No word yet on whether officially branded Downton Abbey household staff members will ever be available to help customers keep their new goodies dust-free.
