Clark Kent, a.k.a. Superman, famously wears his coke-bottle glasses to help him conceal his true identity, and now the Superhero is inspiring a collection of plastic frames by Warby Parker.
The trendy eyewear company has created two exclusive frames inspired by the forthcoming summer blockbuster Man of Steel as part of the Warby Parker x Man of Steel collection. The frames will be available on Warby Parker’s website and at all Warby Parker retail locations starting tomorrow, and each pair carries a $95 price tag, with a portion of the proceeds from sales going to charity.
Warby Parker has garnered quite the following since co-founders Neil Blumenthal and David Gilboa founded the company in 2010. The e-commerce company prides itself in offering prescription eyewear at inexpensive prices by eliminating the middlemen and selling directly to consumers online. Retail prices for each of its vintage-inspired prescription glasses start at $95. For each pair of glasses sold, the company gives a pair to someone in need through partnerships with non-profits. “Superman is the original do-gooder, and from day one Warby Parker set out to be a company that could be profitable, do good in the world, and not charge a premium for it,” a Warby Parker press release said of the collaboration.
The former online-only eyeglass retailer recently opened its first flagship store in the heart of New York’s Soho district after a series of successful “shop-in-shops” and showrooms in several U.S. cities. In an interview with Fast Company, Gilboa said of the decision to open a brick-and-mortar store after a strong e-commerce presence: “The future of our business and all retail is going to have some online and some offline component. The world doesn’t have to be black and white.”
In February, the three-year-old start-up also raised $41.5 million in its latest round of financing from investors that included J. Crew’s chief executive officer Mickey Drexler and American Express, according to the New York Times.
The collection with the Man of Steel just seems like the first of many more collaborations in Warby Parker’s future. The company has reportedly been in talks with Google to provide stylish options for the tech giant’s latest gadget: Google Glass.
Man of Steel, a reboot of the popular film series, is about Superman’s origin story, and features Henry Cavill in the title role and Amy Adams as Lois Lane. It opens in theaters on June 14.
