Booking a last-minute beauty appointment can be an exasperating task, but a new app called ‘Beautified’ is hoping to simplify the process. The mobile-only app, which officially launched today, lets users schedule last-minute beauty appointments, including haircuts, manicures and massages, through a curated list of salons and spas. The service is currently only offered in New York City, with editions for Los Angeles, Miami, Dallas and Chicago slated to debut later this year. The brainchild of New York entrepreneur, restaurateur, DJ and “It-girl” Hannah Bronfman was born from her own frustrations of not being able to nab a beauty appointment when she needed one. So Bronfman set out on a crusade to “fix a First World problem” with co-founders Annie Evans and Peter Hananel, creating a platform that lets users take advantage of last-minute spa and salon cancellations and vacancies. In fact, users can only schedule appointments for the day of, and openings for the following day aren’t available for booking until 6 p.m. the previous day. The eight different types of beauty services available are geared towards on-the-go customers: while blowouts and waxes are offered, hair coloring and more complicated treatments are not.
Nature has long inspired artists and designers, a tradition 34-year-old Dutch designer Merel Karhof is keeping alive by using wind as her muse. Karhof seeks to visualize what wind power can create and her latest project is an engineering ingenuity: a completely wind-powered furniture factory called Windworks that churns out a collection of fine minimalist chairs. The factory is a collaboration with color mill De Kat, saw mill Het Jonge Schaap and Karhof’s own wind-knitting factory. Wind currents power the entire process: Karhof harnessed the free and inexhaustible energy for the saw mill to cut the wood, while the knitting windmill makes pastel-colored cushions as chair upholstery out of wool dyed at the nearby De Kat. “This mobile wind factory illustrates a production process and it visualizes what you can produce with the present urban wind,” she told Gizmodo Australia, which notes that her factory also came with a hinged pennon device that helped slow the machine down when it was spinning too fast—thus achieving almost complete autonomy. The project has its roots in Karhof’s first wind knitting factory in 2010. The designer built a 4-foot windmill at the Royal College of Art in London where she used to study, and attached it to an industrial loom, which knitted scarves and other textiles that she harvested every day or two. Production time varied with wind strength and each scarf, for sale on her website, came with a tag that showed how long it took the wind to knit and the date it was created. Karhof now plans to tour her latest Windworks factory around the world. When the Times asked if she would eventually return to The Netherlands from London, she said that it really depended, naturally, on “where the wind blows.” MORE: Stillness and Light: Chris Levine Captures Kate Moss

Clark Kent, a.k.a. Superman, famously wears his coke-bottle glasses to help him conceal his true identity, and now the Superhero is inspiring a collection of plastic frames by Warby Parker. The trendy eyewear company has created two exclusive frames inspired by the forthcoming summer blockbuster Man of Steel as part of the Warby Parker x Man of Steel collection. The frames will be available on Warby Parker’s website and at all Warby Parker retail locations starting tomorrow, and each pair carries a $95 price tag, with a portion of the proceeds from sales going to charity. (WATCH: Neil Blumenthal and Dave Gilboa, the Visionaries of Warby Parker) Warby Parker has garnered quite the following since co-founders Neil Blumenthal and David Gilboa founded the company in 2010. The e-commerce company prides itself in offering prescription eyewear at inexpensive prices by eliminating the middlemen and selling directly to consumers online. Retail prices for each of its vintage-inspired prescription glasses start at $95. For each pair of glasses sold, the company gives a pair to someone in need through partnerships with non-profits. “Superman is the original do-gooder, and from day one Warby Parker set out to be a company that could be profitable, do good in the world, and not charge a premium for it,” a Warby Parker press release said of the collaboration. The former online-only eyeglass retailer recently opened its first flagship store in the heart of New York’s Soho district after a series of successful “shop-in-shops” and showrooms in several U.S. cities. In an interview with Fast Company, Gilboa said of the decision to open a brick-and-mortar store after a strong e-commerce presence: “The future of our business and all retail is going to have some online and some offline component. The world doesn’t have to be black and white.” (MORE: Online Eyeglass Company Offers Much-Needed Alternative) In February, the three-year-old start-up also raised $41.5 million in its latest round of financing from investors that included J. Crew’s chief executive officer Mickey Drexler and American Express, according to the New

A new round of art repatriation is happening in the United States. American museums and private collectors are giving back prized antiquities following foreign governments’ claim that the treasures were looted from their archeological sites. In the past six months, the Dallas Museum of Art, the Toledo Museum of Art and the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles have all sent back ancient items of Italian origin. Now, Cambodia’s Khmer antiquities are at the center of the great giveback. After New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art decided in early May to return two looted statues, Cambodia is calling for Americans to follow the Met’s lead and send back all ancient artifacts that they “unlawfully” or “illegally” possess, the New York Times reports. (More: Herakles, Weary No More: Boston Museum Returning Top Half of Famous Statue to Turkey) The Southeast Asian country believes that hundreds of Khmer antiquities that thieves stole from its ancient temple complexes during the bloody 1970s civil war era are now in the United States, according to the National Public Radio. The two 10th-century statues that Met would return next month are from Prasat Chen, a more than 1,000-year-old site now hiding in the jungles of Koh Ker, which is about 180 miles northwest of Phnom Penh and capital of the Khmer empire during King Jayavarman IV’s rule. The statues, the “Kneeling Attendants,” had flanked the doorway to the museum’s Southeast Asian galleries after they were donated separately in 1987 and 1992. U.S. officials have found proof that the statues were indeed looted from Prasat Chen, where a dozen sculptures illustrating Hindu epics used to stand but six of them, including the Met ones, have found their way into the United States, according to the Times. (More: In Cambodia, China Fuels Deadly Illegal Logging Trade) Cambodian officials want the rest of the six antiquities returned. Thanks to the 1970 UNESCO Convention that aimed to curb antiquity trafficking, most museums have refrained from buying antiquities without clear provenances. But Cambodia says it has traced three of the

After a barrage of complaints and support for a four-day master class with designer John Galliano, Parsons the New School for Design announced on Tuesday that it has officially canceled the workshop. An email from David E. Van Zandt, the Manhattan school’s president, about the planned workshop – which was to include a discussion about the connection between his professional work and his actions in the world at large – said, “Ultimately, an agreement could not be reached with Mr. Galliano regarding the details of that forum, and so the program will not move forward,” The Cut reported. (MORE: Professor Galliano: Is the Controversial Fashion Designer an Appropriate Mentor for Students?) According to the New York Times, Deborah Kirschner, a spokeswoman for Parsons, would not give details on what derailed those plans, or whether the school gave into complaints about Galliano teaching there. However, a source close to the discussions told the New York Times, that Galliano didn’t ask for restrictions on the content of the talks, but rather the size and the makeup of the audience couldn’t be agreed upon between the school and the designer. The class would have been an opportunity for Galliano to try and restore his reputation after making a tirade of anti-Semitic remarks at a Paris bar two years ago, which led to his dismissal as chief designer at Christian Dior. The outburst later cost him 6,000 euros ($8,400) in fines from a French court, which found him guilty of “public insults based on origin, religious affiliation, race or ethnicity.” (MORE: John Galliano Steps Out in Questionable Hasidic-Chic Outfit) Zandt, and Tim Marshall, the New School’s provost, said they thought the designer’s tirade – which Galliano attributed to substance abuse, and for which he has since publicly apologized – did not disqualify him from giving valuable lessons to Parsons’ students, according to the Times. This isn’t the first time Parsons has had a designer lead classes. Donna Karan, Diane von Furstenberg and Olivier Theyskens have led such classes, which usually involve multiple visits with the

The idiom “business in the front, party in the back,” may have originally referred to the mullet, but it can certainly be applied to the latest coiffures seen in Dubai. The Wall Street Journal reported that Snooki-like poufs, dubbed the ‘camel hump,’ are trending among some young women in the United Arab Emirates city. The look originated to help hold in place women’s veils, which cover the neck and part of the head, but have since taken to new, ahem, heights. Those who have adopted the hair-raising ‘do, which also draws similarities to the ‘beehive’ that was the late Amy Winehouse’s signature, are being called “Camel Heads.” Some women who are adding volume to their hair are rumored to even be using milk cartons to get the extra inches, The Cut noted. (MORE: British Designer Is at it Again, Debuts $17.7 Million Diamond Dress) The women sporting the ‘camel hump’ see it as a way to express their individuality while otherwise enshrouded in black; one woman said, “This style is reflecting me. I’m not doing it to attract anybody. It’s just because I like it.” Others, however, consider the hairstyle a breach of social norms and Islamic teachings, and that women should dress modestly. Women in parts of the Islamic world typically wear a black “Abaya,” a robe-like dress, with a headscarf. As one gentleman notes, “A girl shouldn’t be placing a lamp post on her head to show us that her hair is long [...] a girl can let her hair down and still look pretty without the party and dancing above her head.” Is it too late to send that message to Snooki?
TOMS, the Los Angeles-based shoe and accessories company with a philanthropic commitment, has tapped Jonathan Adler, the New York-based furniture and textiles designer, on a collection of sunglasses – the first time TOMS has tapped a designer to collaborate on eyewear, according to Women’s Wear Daily. Blake Mycoskie, the founder of TOMS, told WWD that the brand approached Adler last year because they “love his irreverent and whimsical approach.” In a recent interview with TIME, Mycoskie said TOMS applied its One for One business model – donating a pair of shoes to a child in need for every pair sold – to eyewear because the company recognized that in the communities it already served there were many children whose eyesight was impacting their education. As well, the brand noticed elderly people developing cataracts, and their loss of vision was having a damaging impact on their families. (MORE: 5 Questions with TOMS Founder Blake Mycoskie) Adler’s eyewear collection for TOMS will adhere to its standard One for One program, which will help the vision of someone in need with every eyewear purchase. So far, the company’s eyewear product line has helped restore over 150,000 people’s sight. The unisex eyewear collection designed by Adler includes three silhouettes – the Lobamba, Marco and Memphis – in variations of red, white and blue, in addition to four eyewear cases. Each frame has the motto “our glasses make you look smarter” emblazoned on the inner temple, and is accompanied by an embroidered eyewear case featuring a colorful needlepoint design by Adler. The collection will be priced at $169 to $179, with the stand-alone case retailing for $42. Consumers can purchase the sunglasses starting in June at the TOMS flagship in Venice, Calif., on its website, and Jonathan Adler stores in Miami, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Austin and London.
Ever wonder what a dress made of gold looks like? Zac Posen’s new gown may just be the answer. The fashion designer has created a 24-karat gold dress valued at $1.5 million, and it’s a definite head-turner. But what was the impetus behind the gilded number? Perhaps the Project Runway judge heard about the recent decline in gold prices? Actually, the one-of-a-kind dress was created as a promotion for Magnum Ice Cream’s latest ice cream bar Magnum Gold?!, a vanilla bean ice cream dessert with salted caramel and covered in a golden chocolate coating, The Gloss reported. (MORE: Zac Posen Will Replace Michael Kors as ‘Project Runway’ Judge) When called on to design a gown, Posen told Styleite that he “wanted to create something that felt like liquid gold – the ultimate glamour gown.” The designer opted to make the dress out of gold paillettes because he thought it would look better on camera, “with the liquid quality echoing the drippiness of melting ice cream and the texture of molten gold.” The dress is covered in more than 10,000 hand-embroidered sequins, each one handmade from sheets of 24-karat gold and laid on paillettes. And they’re technically not solid gold because it would have made the gown too heavy for anyone to wear, The Gloss pointed out. Despite all the handwork involved, the dress took Posen about two months to make. One month to sew all the sequins on, and then another for the fittings and touch-ups. The designer said that underneath the gold paillettes, “there’s a serious couture structure, even though it looks like a bias moving dress.” The dress made its debut in a short film entitled As Good As Gold, which features Joe Manganiello and Caroline Correra, who was fitted for the $1.5 million number and wore the dress to the Tribeca Film Festival in New York City last week.
Equality Sans: A Typeface for Marriage Equality

Remember when that pink-and-red equal sign popped up all over your Facebook NewsFeed and Twitter stream? Friends were changing their profile pictures to the little icon and tweeting it during recent legislative procedures around the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), making it a rally of support for civil rights, while becoming a social phenomenon for the Human Rights Campaign. Now, two designers have incorporated the logo into a new typeface: Equality Sans. Users can download the free-to-use typeface, so that with every stroke of a key, they can show their support for marriage equality. The designers, Caprice Yu and Steve Peck, set out to expand the message of marriage equality with the new typeface, saying the “message is in the medium.” (MORE: What Is the Red Equal Sign All Over Facebook and Twitter?) But would reading an email or seeing a status update with the pink-and-red equal sign be too much for one’s eyes? The team said that the equal signs were overt, but carried a lot weight, Co.Design reported. “The thinking was that the idea of equality supersedes the message, no matter what the literal message is,” the designers explained. So, although a reader may not be able to read the literal message from someone using the Equality Sans typeface, Co.Design noted that they should be struck over and over again by the equals sign – the iconic symbol of the movement, originally developed by Stone Yamashita.
Correction Appended: April 17, 2013 Beyoncé doesn’t need help to make the latest headlines, but the recent style stunt she pulled in Serbia has the Internet abuzz (see it here). The “Single Ladies” singer kicked off the opening night of her Mrs. Carter Show World Tour in Belgrade, wearing much-anticipated outfits by designers like Emilio Pucci, Julien Macdonald, Dsquared2 and Ralph & Russo, BET reported. But one particular look seems to have caught everyone off guard – like a deer in headlights. In one of her many changes during the show, Beyoncé hit the stage in a fringe-lined gold bodysuit, complete with faux breasts and protruding nipples. It was eye-catching, to say the least. Her show-stopping number, which the Huffington Post noted put Madonna’s infamous Jean-Paul Gaultier cone bra to shame, was designed by The Blonds. (MORE: Beyonce Named Honorary Chair for Met Ball) There’s been mixed reactions to the new face of H&M’s wardrobe choice. But maybe Beyoncé’s wardrobe surprise should have been expected. The Cut pointed out that during the star’s Super Bowl performance, she ripped off her lace skirt and threw it into the audience. But maybe Beyoncé’s jewel-encrusted costume is just the beginning of a new trend: fake breasts over real breasts. The Cut noted that on Saturday night, Rebel Wilson had a “double nip slip,” while hosting the MTV Video Music Awards. The Australian funny-woman revealed a double-nippled fake breast worn over her real one during the show. It’s uncertain whether clothes paying homage to the female anatomy will take hold, but one thing’s for sure: You can expect this isn’t the last time you’ll see Beyoncé’s nude torso – she finishes her tour on August 4 in Brooklyn. WATCH: Beyoncé Sings National Anthem Live for All the Haters at Super Bowl Press Conference The original version of this article misidentified the designer of Beyoncé’s gold leotard. It was designed by The Blonds, not Julien Macdonald.
