Pop culture geeks rejoice: 105-year-old sneaker maker Converse is teaming up with The Simpsons for a shoe collection inspired by characters from the long-running (it’s in its 25th season!) animated TV show. The Simpsons Chuck Taylor All Star Collection, available at Journeys and Converse and retailing for $37 to $65, offers both adult and kids’ sneakers that feature custom graphics of the family we’ve all come to know and tolerate (and love). The men’s sneaker has Homer exclaiming “D’oh!” on one side of the shoe, and “Woo-hoo!” on the other, representing the full range of the character’s moods. The Bart sneaker has Bart writing, “I will not waste chalk” on the Springfield Elementary School chalkboard. And lest you think they forgot Marge, Lisa, and Maggie—there’s a sneaker depicting the entire family, dominated by Marge’s beehive. The Simpsons sneakers are not Converse’s first high-profile collaboration. First stitched outside of Boston in 1908 as a basketball shoe, the brand’s basic design has stayed remarkably similar throughout the years—but like a chameleon, it has changed its skin in countless ways, donning everything from Superman comics to leopard print on its canvas. From couture designers to musicians, it seems that everyone has tried their hand at creating their own Converse. This is partly thanks to Converse’s parent company, Nike, who in 2003 bailed out the iconic Chuck Taylors after an economic slump, buying the company for $305 million (and boosting its international sales), much to the chagrin of many of its rebellious wearers. Glamming up the alterna-kid shoe proved no problem for designers like the avant-garde Comme des Garçons, who on May 28 launched its third Converse collaboration, after the first two nabbed rave reviews. Street-wear styles from the Comme des Garçons PLAY line translated to the sneakers, with its signature, quirky heart-with-eyes logo decorating Converse leather. Equally playful are Marimekko’s creations for Converse: The Finnish textile company, which made a splash in the 1960s with its bright flower prints, launched its second Chucks collaboration in April, infusing the sneakers with bright colors, polka dots and even strawberry patterns. Missoni, too, put its unique stamp on the company: For

Zac Posen’s name brings to mind old-Hollywood glamour, refined tailoring, dramatic details. It conjures up images of all the celebrities he has outfitted for the red carpet, including Beyoncé, Natalie Portman, and Claire Danes. But with his new diffusion line for David’s Bridal, Truly Zac Posen, a more diverse variety of women—of brides, to be more specific—will be able to pick up his designs, off-the-rack. Featuring the designer’s signature details, such as mermaid tails, figure-flattering corsetry, and delicate layering of textures, the line will launch next February online and in 50 stores, with six wedding-dress styles ranging from $850 to $1,350, and five social occasion dresses (perhaps for the bridesmaids?), which will retail for $195 to $225. “Truly by Zac Posen brings to David’s his well-known red-carpet aesthetic and flair for drama,” Catalina Maddox-Wagers, executive vice president of merchandising at David’s Bridal, told TIME. “His designs are meant to enhance and celebrate the beauty of a woman’s curves expressed in the form of exquisite corsetry and sophisticated lines accented with romantic details—a perfect formula for bridal that was missing from our assortment.” She added that plus-sized brides are likely to love to line, since “Zac’s fascination with curves translates beautifully and with ease into plus sizes.” “I’ve always felt there was a void when brides come to me and want to commission a wedding dress, because that means they can’t find what’s out there,” Posen, who designed custom wedding dresses for Portia de Rossi and Coco Rocha, told USA Today. Zac’s collection for David’s Bridal joins several other wedding diffusion lines that have sprung up in recent years, offering brides a designer look and cache for less cash. Here’s a look at some standouts: WHITE by Vera for David’s Bridal: Vera Wang’s line for David’s Bridal, launched in 2011, features wedding gowns far more affordable than her runway styles ($600-$1,700) and bridesmaid dresses ($160-$200) in a range of silhouettes, from strapless, draped lace column gowns and Grecian-inspired draping to short one-shoulder and strapless tulle dresses. Both formal ball room styles

Fashion is all about drama and Cleopatra’s life was full of it, from her legendary affairs with some of the most powerful men of their time to her struggles to maintain influence as ruler of Egypt. Even her death was not a quiet affair—a series of miscommunications led to both her and her lover Mark Antony committing suicide while believing that the other had already died, in a Romeo and Juliet-like twist. As a figure that was exotic (queen of a distant-seeming land) and yet accessible (she was not ethnically Egyptian but Macedonian), she was and has remained a singular influence in the world of style. The extent of her beauty, based on statements from her contemporaries and numismatic artifacts, is debatable. But Cleopatra was by all accounts an exceptionally charming woman, one who intuited how to present herself in the most strategic manner. Similar to stars of today, Cleopatra carefully controlled her public image. When she traveled to Tarsus by barge to meet Mark Antony for the first time, she created quite a spectacle, dressed as the Egyptian goddess Isis with handsome boys fanning her as she reclined on her perch. Clearly the lady had a taste for pageantry—something a star like Lady Gaga would no doubt appreciate. (MORE: Here’s What a $1.5 Million, 24-Karat Gold Dress Looks Like) Cleopatra skillfully combined both Greek and Egyptian elements in her wardrobe. Today’s peplum is descended from the ancient Greek peplos style, a long tube-like garment belted at the waist and cleverly folded to give the illusion of a flared piece of fabric at the hips. But the Queen of the Nile mixed these more modest gowns with seductive Egyptian fashions, much in the same way that modern women mix designers and styles both high and low. As depicted in art, her hair was perfectly coiffed and attended to, often arranged in the “melon hairstyle” of her day which combined multiple braids into a bun at the nape of the neck, akin to a complicated updo today. She was known to

Swedish retailer H&M is continuing its long history of designer diffusion lines with a collaboration with Isabel Marant, available in stores and online Nov. 14. Best known for her boho-luxe aesthetic, the French designer began making her own clothes at 15 after not being able to find styles she liked in stores; her personal aesthetic still informs her work today. “I do prêt-a-porter (ready-to-wear); I do not revolutionize the fashion world,” she said in 2011. Marant’s collection for H&M will feature clothing and accessories for women, as well as her first-ever line for men. “I am at creating something real—something women want to wear in their everyday lives, with a certain carefree style,” Marant said in H&M’s press release announcing the partnership. “The collection is infused with this kind of easiness and attitude.” Fans of Marant—and fast fashion—will have to wait another five months to shop the collection. But for those wondering what a Marant x H&M collaboration will look like, here are some clues from the designer’s latest runway shows.

Armani Invites Emerging Italian Designers to Show in His Milan Venue

On June 22 Giorgio Armani will open his Milan runway space to up-and-coming Italian fashion designers as part of his latest push to bolster the city’s fashion week. Menswear designer Andrea Pompilio will show his spring/summer collection at Armani’s venue to kick off the designer’s initiative, which will spotlight a different young designer each season. “We need concrete actions to support Italian fashion, initiatives that give more strength and a feeling of novelty to Milan’s Fashion Week,” said Armani. “It is for this reason that I decided to make my theatre on Via Bergognone available for the fashion shows of some of the most promising designers, who can count on my building’s technical services.” (PHOTOS: Giorgio Armani’s Space-Themed Spring Show) Armani’s new program comes a month after the designer called on Italian brands to bring all their ready-to-wear shows back to Milan (many are currently owned by French conglomerates and show during Paris Fashion Week, which follows Milan’s event). But some designers, such as Miuccia Prada, who presents her namesake collection in Milan, but her Miu Miu show in Paris, argue that it’s just not possible with timing, to stage two runway shows within days of each other, even if she shares Armani’s sentiments. “With the sale of our luxury labels to foreigners, our entire system risks falling into second league,” Prada told La Republicca, in a 2012 interview translated by WWD. “Because if our brands cross our borders, the credit, glamour, fame and decision making is in the hands of others, and we are abandoned, downgraded.” Prada attributed the preference for Paris in part to the Italian press, whom she faulted for not taking fashion seriously. Designers go elsewhere, “looking for the best,” she said. Initiatives like Armani’s young designer program aren’t likely to change the fashion community’s perceptions of Milan or convince Italian brands to return overnight. But at the very least, they’re adding momentum to Armani and Italy’s Chamber of Fashion’s efforts to create a stronger presence for Milan.

An improved version of Lululemon’s black yoga pants are back on the market three months after they were pulled from store shelves for being too see through. The activewear company had said the pants’ sheerness was a result of a style change and faulty production when they were removed from shelves in March. Retailing between $72 and $98, the Luon yoga pants were one of Lululemon’s best-selling items and accounted for nearly 17% of sales. Chief product officer Sheree Waterson left Lululemon shortly after the pants recall, and the company predicted a $57 million to $67 million loss in revenue as a result of the too-sheer bottoms. But despite the bad press, Lululemon’s stock shares gained 18 percent following the flap and grew another 1.9%, to $72.29, according to the AP, after the company’s announcement this week that the pants were back on the market. In a blog post on its site, Lululemon said the “recipe” for its Luon pants hadn’t changed, but that their testing process had. “The truth of the matter is the only way you can actually test for the issue is to put the pants on and bend over,” said CEO Christine Day, on a call with investors after the pants were pulled. The new standards require pants to go through about 15 tests for coverage, according to Lululemon, who even tapped university scientists to develop a “sheer-o-metre” to measure the pants’ sheerness in various poses. Still, even Lululemon acknowledges that the method isn’t perfect, and that future problems over opacity are possible: “luon is a knit fabric—if you stretch a knit fabric far enough, it will go sheer,” the post warns.
In the latest matchup between a high-profile designer and an airline, New York City-based designer Prabal Gurung has been tapped to create new uniforms for close to 10,000 of All Nippon Airways (ANA)’s flight attendants and ground staff. “The new uniform will pay homage to the history of the airline while incorporating a fresh and modern perspective,” Gurung said. The partnership follows on the heels of Vivienne Westwood’s announcement of her collaboration with Virgin Atlantic for a fresh set of uniforms. Last year, Virgin America enlisted Banana Republic to create new fashions, and Singapore Air worked with Pierre Balmain to spruce up its look. This fashion industry darling looks to be a smart choice to shape a new look for Japan’s largest airline. After a childhood in Nepal, Gurung moved to New York in 1999 and attended Parsons School of Design. He worked as the design director at Bill Blass before founding his own label in 2009, and in 2010 he was named runner-up for the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund prize. In February 2013 his diffusion line with Target flew off the shelves. Gurung is known for a sleek, polished aesthetic and his use of graphic floral prints; his designs have endeared him to the likes of Zoe Saldana, Rooney Mara and Michelle Obama herself. His ANA uniforms will be revealed later this summer. Click here for a look at how fashion in flight has evolved over the past 75 years.
In the ongoing tax evasion trial of designers Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana, Prosecutor Gaetano Ruta called for a stringent 2½ year jail sentence for the designers during his closing arguments. Ruta also called for D&G board member Cristiana Ruella to receive the same judgment, and for D&G accountant Luciano Patelli to serve three years in prison. (MORE: Kampot and Kep: French Fancy in Darkest Cambodia) Dolce and Gabbana, along with several of their business associates, are currently on trial in Milan for tax evasion to the tune of €420 million. The case stems from the 2004 sale of Dolce & Gabbana and the diffusion line D&G to a holding company based in Luxembourg that is also owned by the designers. Italian authorities allege that the holding company is merely a strategy for Dolce & Gabbana to avoid paying higher corporate taxes. Their legal saga has dragged on for years—in 2010 they were indicted for tax evasion, but later that year the charges were dropped. Then in 2011, Italy’s Supreme Court re-opened the case after a prosecutorial appeal, and the trial began in early 2013. This March, the Italian Tax Commission ordered Dolce & Gabbana to pay a fine of €343 million plus interest in a proceeding separate from the criminal trial, although related to the same matter. While tax evasion has been something of a norm in Italy, last year it drained the Italian economy of an estimated €285 billion, so it’s no surprise that the designers’ legal proceedings are being closely watched. Dolce and Gabbana have firmly denied any wrongdoing.
After breaking sales records with its $137 million auction of Elizabeth Taylor’s jewelry in December 2011, Christie’s is now putting up the screen legend’s first wedding gown for sale. On June 26, Christie’s will auction the satin dress in a pop culture sale, where it’s expected to fetch as much as $75,500. Taylor wore the dress, designed by MGM costume designer Helen Rose, when she married Conrad Hilton at 18. The wedding was an elaborate affair, attracting 700 guests including Hollywood icons such as Ginger Rogers, Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly. Taylor’s wedding dress was an equally elaborate affair: the gown had a 15-yard satin train and required a team of more than 15 people who worked full-time on it for nearly three months. Still, it wasn’t Rose’s most famous creation—she’s perhaps best known for designing Grace Kelly’s wedding dress for her marriage to Rainier III, Prince of Monaco. The high-collar, long-sleeved number has been widely copied and provided inspiration for the wedding dresses of celebrities (Ivanka Trump) and royalty (Kate Middleton) alike. PHOTOS: 11 Iconic Wedding Dresses Taylor’s wedding gown isn’t the only big fashion item the auction house will offer up this summer. Just two weeks after the pop culture sale, Christie’s will present an online-only auction of select pieces from the wardrobe of Suzy Menkes, a longtime fashion journalist who will soon assume the title of international fashion editor of the revamped International New York Times. “I have never thrown anything out of my wardrobe since 1964,” Menkes said in a statement. “If I had a large open space in my home, I would dedicate it, like an art gallery, to my collection. But there is something sad about clothes laid in a tomb of trunks.” Christian Lacroix dresses, an Hermes silk scarf and a quilted Chanel purse adorned with “SUZY” in gold letters are among the 80+ designer items up for grabs from Menkes, whose lot goes on sale July 11-22.

Pinterest relies on individual users to populate boards with pins—of food, fashion, home décor and more—which are pulled from retailers’ websites and reshared by fellow users on the social media site. It’s this user-focused model that explains how Chanel landed at the top of a list of popular fashion brands on Pinterest, despite having an official account that lacks any pins or boards of its own. Chanel topped the list with an average of 56 pins and 1,244 reshares per day, according to a study conducted by analytics firm Curalate and Pivot Conferences. The report only factored in data about shares and impressions from everyday users, not activity from the brands themselves. Shoe companies Christian Louboutin and Jimmy Choo rounded out the top three, respectively. Here’s a look at which other companies made the list:
