On the cover of her debut album Torture Garden Session, DJ-producer Janette Slack wears a mask that resembles her own face. Given the stress and strain she’s endured while mastering the collection of dance tracks, it’s understandable she has a hardened exterior. In recent months she ended a 10-year relationship, and, owing to city planning ordinances, was evicted from the warehouse she spent years converting into her home and studio. “It’s been a really heartbreaking experience,” she says of finishing the album while dismantling her apartment near London’s Barbican Centre. “I have to tell people everything is fine and put this face on.” Out last month, Torture Garden Session moves beyond the façade and into the mind of one of London’s top female DJs. The album melds house, dubstep and breakbeat, and journeys from mellow and head-bobby tracks to the hard-edged and industrial. Occasionally its lyrics—”pain can be so good if you tolerate it”—suggest she approached the album as therapy. But Slack says the album stems from other motivations. A resident DJ at Torture Garden, London’s legendary fetish club, she hopes it will clarify her style to those outside of clubland. “People who don’t go to the club ask me if I play ‘pornohouse,’ ‘nude music,’ and ‘sex-a-tron,’” she says while furrowing her brow. “I don’t use genres. I use feelings like cheeky, chunky, twisted and demented.” The path to her first album has been as unpredictable as the dance floor. Born in Hong Kong to a Chinese mother and Scottish father, Slack came to London at 17 to study hospitality management. Trips to record shops with names like Plastic Fantastic and Vinyl Addiction led to friendships with DJs and fellow club enthusiasts, and eventually a spot in a sound engineering course at London’s SAE Institute. She released her first track while working at a studio for $60 a week. “They took my name off it after selling the first 750 copies,” she says. “I just collapsed and cried.” The tears eventually dried and Slack, now 32, began mailing out mix

It’s been 11 years since No Doubt’s last studio album, Rock Steady. As you wrote and recorded together again, did things feel rusty? It was definitely a rough start. I thought, “I might have overdone it. I have nothing left inside me except a baby growing.” Even after Zuma was born, I felt depleted and had no ideas. So we went on tour. Being able to sing the songs I’d already written—and seeing the fan support—made me relax and relieved the pressure. Why the title Push and Shove? It felt like that to make this record. The whole record talks about being overwhelmed and working hard to get the creativity going. (MORE: No Doubt Releases New Single, ‘Settle Down’) You and your husband Gavin Rossdale weren’t fans of each other’s music before dating. Who came around first? We kind of both did at the same time because our label asked Gavin to take No Doubt on tour, and he said, “They’re not a good fit.” Until he saw the video for “Just a Girl”—then he decided to think about it. When we met, we were both like, “Uh-oh.” We ended up going on tour together. Did you make the first move, or did he? Oh my god, are you serious? He did! I’m not that kind of girl. You recently said that you wear makeup to make Gavin like you more. Is natural beauty overrated? Of course not! Personally, I’ve just always loved the theater, the glamour. I was an art major. But it’s not something that I take seriously. It’s unbelievable—you say something and you’re laughing, and then it’s quoted everywhere. It’s embarrassing. Your 6-year-old son Kingston is photographed almost as often as you are for his style—the blue Mohawk, the biker jackets. Are those his choices? When he was 3 and got his first Mohawk, that was me. But it was his fault. He stuck a slinky in his hair, and it got completely tangled, so we had to do something. I was about to go on tour, and

Known for their audacious, pro- vocative takes on masterpieces, identical-twin opera directors Christopher and David Alden have been at the pinnacle of their field for three decades. “It is strange,” says David, “to have someone else in the world who looks just like you and does the same thing you do, and often with the same people, but never at the same time.” Or, for that matter, on the same continent Christopher is based in New York City, David in London, and both are in constant demand all over the world. This year, however, both Aldens are taking on high-profile assignments Stateside: Christopher with Don Giovanni for the Los Angeles Philharmonic, David with Un Ballo in Maschera for New York City’s Metropolitan Opera House. (See below.) The brothers grew up in Manhattan, sons of playwright Jerome Alden and ballerina Barbara Gaye, who, while pregnant, danced in the original production of Annie Get Your Gun starring Ethel Merman. “That probably explains why we became who we are,” Christopher says. “All of Merman’s screaming prepared us to spend our lives around opera singers.” Immersed in theater and classical music from childhood, they were drawn to opera for its combination of the two art forms. By their teens, they were “fanatical standees” (David’s phrase) at the old Metropolitan Opera house. Though they share a calling and maintain a close relationship, the Aldens have always pursued independent careers. “We tried to direct one opera together — Così fan Tutte for Daniel Barenboim in Chicago — and we lasted all of one day,” Christopher says. “We were overlapping ideas, and that is not a good use of time.” If there is a hallmark of the Aldens’ style, it is the fusing of the political and the intensely personal. One of David’s most famous productions, for the L.A. Opera in 1988, was of Berg’s Wozzeck, a tale from the early 19th century of a soldier whose uncontrollable rage leads to his tragic demise. Alden updated the story to reflect the conflict in Vietnam. “There is nothing more political than an opera production because of what it
