We give this company points for daring to show this much skin, but displaying two very differently shaped women and declaring both them in need of girdling isn’t much of an advance. About 40 years after this ad was made, Dove came out with a series of ads in which women of similarly diverse body types were celebrated for their differences. Of course that was around the time Spanx, the 21-century girdle became popular, so we don’t seem to be giving up on girdles yet. (Exquisite Form, 1969)

A new book, "Advertising From the Mad Men Era", released this month by Taschen, offers a glimpse at how women in the 1950's and 60s were depicted, from "Little Fibber" girdles to men's cologne that turns pretty gals into trophies — literally.
