What began as a partnership between a talented tailor, Herman Bergdorf, and his young apprentice Edwin Goodman has blossomed into a fashion mecca on 5th Avenue: Bergdorf Goodman. It has become a singular name among the pantheon of New York City department stores, and this fall, Bergdorf’s celebrates its 111th anniversary with a cavalcade of events, including a book and documentary both entitled Scatter My Ashes at Bergdorf Goodman. TIME culled through the tome—and other books on the iconic store—to break down Bergdorf’s by the numbers.

23: age of Edwin Goodman when he came to Herman Bergdorf’s shop in 1899 to learn tailoring. They formed a joint enterprise, the business began to flourish and Goodman eventually bought Bergdorf out. The older tailor promptly retired to Paris.

17: rooms in the penthouse above Bergdorf’s that Edwin’s son Andrew Goodman, his wife Nena and their family lived in for more than half a century. After Andrew’s death, the apartment was converted to a John Barrett hair salon.
$100: price per couple for a plate at Bergdorf’s champagne dinner before their Golden Anniversary Ball at the Plaza in 1951. All the money was donated to the New York City Cancer Committee, as the store underwrote the entire cost.
2: hours that an unannounced Grace Kelly spent selecting her wedding invitations at Bergdorf’s in 1956
60+: fur coats purchased by John Lennon and Yoko Ono just before one Christmas in the ’70s. The luxe garments were personally brought to the Dakota by the fur department buyers on Christmas Eve.
4: number of looks a young Michael Kors showed Bergdorf’s fashion director Dawn Mello during a meeting in 1981. After Mello was quickly sold on his talent, Kors would go on to create his first eponymous collection exclusively for Bergdorf Goodman
