What was supposed to a great sartorial and patriotic moment for the country—the unveiling of Ralph Lauren’s uniforms for the U.S. Olympic team—turned into a national controversy after it was revealed, days later, that the outfits were made in China. (Fashion-wise, the sailor-inspired uniforms were fairly bland aside from the obnoxiously large Ralph Lauren logo that adorned each piece.) Everyone from fellow fashion designers to government leaders got vocal about the issue. “You’d think they’d know better,” said House Speaker John Boehner, while Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi declared, “They should be wearing uniforms made in America.” Ralph Lauren ultimately apologized for the faux pas (which he also made in 2008), but by then, the damage was irreversible.
