The Hope Diamond is perhaps the world’s most recognizable jewel, so it’s no surprise that it has passed through Winston’s hands. At 45 ½ carats, the blue gem is said to be cursed, although that hasn’t turned admirers away from it. Though Winston purchased it in 1949, in the interest of building up a national gemstone collection he donated the diamond to the Smithsonian nine years later. On the 50th anniversary of the donation, the museum partnered with Harry Winston designers to create a new setting for the stone, the “Embracing Hope” necklace.
