Drew Barrymore is the latest celebrity to venture into makeup, debuting a new beauty collection, Flower, this month at Wal-Mart. As a child star who matured into an acclaimed actress, Barrymore told People she practically grew up in a makeup chair. But she isn’t claiming to know about beauty through osmosis. She served as co-creative director at CoverGirl for six years, gaining real experience that helped launch her own line.
Not only are her products adorable, luxe and impeccably made, they’re also affordable: every single item is under $15. That’s because Barrymore ditched the whole advertising part of launching a new line—the cash spent on marketing a new line can take up a hefty chunk of a budget, driving up the prices of high-end makeup. In fact, Barrymore oversaw every aspect of the development process and even traveled to Wal-Mart’s headquarters in Bentonville, Ark. to test out shades of lip colors, eye shadows, nail polishes and other goods that make up her 181-item line.
“I’ve seen women empower and transform themselves,” Barrymore told People. “I’ve worn makeup my whole life for film and fashion and worked with the best makeup artists in the world and I love what makeup does for you.”
