Marco Caprai, the winemaker and proprietor of the family-owned Umbrian winery Arnaldo Caprai—named European Winery of the Year in 2012 by Wine Enthusiast—is widely credited with reviving sagrantino, an indigenous Italian varietal that nearly vanished in the ‘60s. Sagrantino is relatively unknown in the U.S., but Arnaldo Caprai’s Sagrantino di Montefalco will make a convert out of any skeptic. A complex red that’s full of flavor, the wine is very tannic with a long finish that ends on a satisfying chocolaty note.
