When it’s impossible to find any video longer than 90 seconds in which Serge Gainsbourg does not light up, it becomes clear that his Gitanes were not simply an addiction but an inexorable part of his style. Although there were countless looks he adopted over the course of his career—each decorated with their own eccentricities—none were as consistent or as present as the blue box of Franco-Spanish cigarettes he kept in the palm of his hand. By the end of his life he was smoking five boxes a day, which is about a cigarette every ten minutes. Everything he did was fogged over by a cloud of cigarette smoke—even the interview he did from a hospital bed after his first heart attack.
