Beverly Johnson would go on to appear on more than 500 magazine covers over her illustrious career, but it was the August 1974 cover of American Vogue for which she’ll most famously be remembered: That month, she became the first African-American woman to front the fashion bible, breaking modeling and racial boundaries alike.
