For a May 1 appearance on CBS This Morning in New York City, Ann Romney wore a basic t-shirt adorned with a bird pattern. But when fashion bloggers revealed that the simple-looking top was actually a designer shirt that retailed for $990, Romney’s choice was widely panned, emboldening the narrative that her husband, Mitt, was a wealthy businessman who was too out of touch with everyday voters to become President. Designer Reed Krakoff, however, later defended Romney’s choice, telling TIME: “Both [Michelle] Obama and Romney buy designer clothing, and I thought it showed how lopsided these conversations are. They both can and should wear what they want.”
