Created by artist Leanie van der Vyver and Dutch designer René van den Berg, the “Scary Beautiful” shoes force wearers to crouch forward, bend their knees and subject themselves to irrational levels of discomfort just to take a walk in the “front heels.” The shoes are supposed to serve as commentary about the ideals of beauty—and the insane lengths women go to in order to achieve them—and the result is certainly more scary than beautiful.
