The first flight attendants were nurses, added to airline crews in 1930 to calm passengers, as well as assist with the vomiting a rough ride could induce. The cabin crew started off wearing smocks over their nurses uniforms, but ended the decade outfitted in sharply-tailored suits. Pilots were initially less than pleased to have them aboard, until they realized they would no longer have to be the ones serving coffee.
