In new uniforms by Pierre Balmain, TWA attendants line up in Paris for a publicity shot. Proper dress included hats, gloves and a girdle. In the early 60s, airlines like TWA strove to give their female cabin crew the look of proper upper middle class girls. They were urged to take classes, keep abreast of current events to make passenger chit-chat and insisted they be well-groomed, dictating lipstick and nail polish colors, as well as hair length. They wanted their crew to be brand ambassadors on and off the tarmac, so no smoking or chewing gum. One TWA uniform even had a lapel that you could button over the TWA insignia while taking a cigarette break so as not be identified as being part of the airline.
