Honestly, InStyle’s September cover model could have been anyone: Drew Barrymore looked so generic on it, if you squinted, you would be forgiven for thinking she was Amy Adams. And “Drew!” was in such small print on the cover line—atypical to a star like her. Plus, while she’s a lovely choice for a cover girl, this one just didn’t do justice to her spunky, ahead-of-the-curve personality (although she’s toned it down in recent years: In the magazine, she talks about wanting a big family). And now for the good news: The cover was classic and clean, and she looks put-together and ready to go back to work (two things we all aspire to for fall). We have to hand it to the accessories editors for dressing up that bland-ish outfit with Chanel earrings and snakeskin belt. And since it’s a magazine about how to dress for every day, that approach works. At 716 pages, this is InStyle’s biggest issue ever (that’s what they always say, isn’t it? But in this case it’s true).
