Michelle Obama wears a Michael Kors dress as U.S. President Barack Obama delivers his victory speech after being reelected for a second term at McCormick Place on Nov. 6, 2012 in Chicago.
It’s no longer adequate to describe Michael Kors as a fashion designer—his creations have extended into accessories, handbags, shoes and even home goods. Add to that list his regular appearance as a Project Runway guest judge, and it’s nearly impossible to avoid seeing something Kors has had a hand in. But in 2012, the designer will be best remembered for designing the shift that Michelle Obama wore on Election night, when her husband won a second White House term. That burgundy dress—which she first debuted in 2010—was one of many Kors-designed pieces worn this year by Obama, herself an influential fashion icon.
