Each December, Google unveils its annual Zeitgeist lists of the top-searched terms across several categories, from news events and song lyrics to gadgets and diets. 2012’s most-searched high fashion companies had predictable favorites, including Michael Kors, whose designs were worn by First Lady Michelle Obama throughout the presidential election season. But it’s also notable for the names that didn’t make the cut, such as Alexander McQueen, a favorite of Kate Middleton. Herewith, TIME looks at the top 10 most-searched fashion brands—and a couple that were surprisingly absent from the list.
